Kathikas Cyprus’ Hidden Gem: Sip, Savor, and Soak in Cyprus’ Views
Kathikas is one of the most charming villages in the Paphos district, built on the Laona plateau at an altitude of about 675 meters above sea level. Its location is ideal — right in the middle of the road between Paphos (22 km) and Polis (14 km), while only 12 km from Coral Bay. With a population of around 450 residents, Kathikas combines authenticity with accessibility, making it a perfect base for exploring the region.
HISTORY & NAME
The name “Kathikas” is believed to come from its location. In earlier times, caravans traveling between Paphos and Polis would stop here to rest because it was the highest point along the route. It is said that they would “sit” (kathíkan in Greek) at this spot, which gave the village its name.
ATMOSPHERE & SETTING
Kathikas is a beautiful stone-built village, full of traditional houses and narrow lanes. Surrounded by vineyards and lush greenery, it offers a serene and authentic Cypriot atmosphere. Thanks to its altitude, the climate is particularly favorable: cool and dry summers and crisp, cold winters. From different parts of the village, one can enjoy stunning panoramic views — either towards Coral Bay and the Akamas Peninsula or across to the Troodos Mountains and the Paphos forest.
NATURE & THE AKAMAS PENINSULA
One of Kathikas’ greatest advantages is its proximity to the Akamas Peninsula National Park, one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas of Cyprus. The park is just 10–12 km away (a 15–20 minute drive), making Kathikas an excellent base for day trips. The Akamas offers spectacular hiking trails, jeep safaris, and nature walks through gorges, forests, and coastal paths. Highlights include: • Avakas Gorge, a dramatic limestone canyon. • Lara Beach, famous for its golden sand and protected turtle nesting grounds. • Blue Lagoon, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, ideal for swimming. • Scenic viewpoints overlooking both the Chrysochous Bay and the western coastline of Paphos. Kathikas’ location on the plateau means that within a short drive, visitors can enjoy both the mountain landscapes and the untouched coastline of Akamas — a rare combination in Cyprus.
FOOD & HOSPITALITY
Kathikas is also famous for its traditional taverns to fancy restaurants, which serve authentic Cypriot meze and seasonal dishes prepared with local ingredients. The village’s hospitality is legendary — visitors are always welcomed like family. For a truly local experience, a stop at a kafenio (traditional coffee shop) in the village square is a must, where you can enjoy a cup of strong Cypriot coffee and experience the genuine rhythm of village life.
VINEYARD & WINE
The village is renowned for its vineyards and winemaking heritage. Kathikas is one of the leading producers of the indigenous Xynisteri grape, considered one of the finest white varieties of Cyprus. In fact, more than half of Cyprus’ white wine production comes from grapes grown in Kathikas. Visitors will find several local wineries in and around the village, such as Vasilikon and Sterna, offering tastings and tours that showcase the region’s winemaking tradition.
